Let my people go….

“Let my people go” were the famous words used by Moses, that great leader of the Israelites, when he went before pharaoh to ask for their release…

History tells us the Israelites were at the time undergoing immense hardships and were looking for a saviour to lead them to freedom and self rule in a land of their own. When Pharaoh refused to let them go, Moses unleashed a separatist war of plagues and death on the majority Egyptian people, finally convincing Pharaoh to give them their autonomy and freedom. Of course, he too lost his way a bit and the Israelites were forced to spend 40 years in the desert…! But everything ended well we’re told.

I wonder if the Tamil people too were at one time looking to Prabhakaran as a divinely guided saviour who would lead their people to freedom and happiness away from the oppression they were experiencing.

Unfortunately for the Tamil people of Sri Lanka, Prabhakaran too seems to have lost his way, and led them into an endless wasteland of death and suffering. the difference being, he has led them down this road for 30 years even before he could win them their freedom…! It seems if he were allowed a free hand, he would continue to lead them further into the desert, for many more years to come. without a hope of ever seeing the promised land.

So it seems history has taken a strange twist, with the saviour of the Tamil people holding the his own people as veritable hostages, and subjecting them to untold misery and suffering, while the President of our country is making the appeal on their behalf…

so come on Mr. Prabhakaran, listen to the words… and…

Let Your People Go…

Oh I say! It’s nice to see that you are not blind to the total situation in SL.
And nice to see a post from you after such a long time.
    Really nice, nice!

You have a point, but you have to remember that the president is only making an appeal to make himself look good. Is there a guarantee that they will fair better with him? The rest of us certainly aren’t! We are afraid to speak our minds for fear of being shot dead or tortured or have our families slaughtered, aren’t we? Look at Chevan Daniels, Tissanayagam, Lasantha and so many others. I’m not disagreeing with what you’re saying at all, Prabha better let them go. But I hope that when he does, they’ll be able to walk into real safety and opportunities to live a decent life.

DD – wasn’t blind at all machang, just very disillusioned with certain other issues other than the war. Issues which you too have written about recently… 🙂

TMS – It remains to be seen what solutions will be offered to the Tamil people, I’m hoping the present government takes this opportunity to move to higher ground and provide freedom and equality of rights to all Sri Lankans, irrespective of race or religion.

hmm..nicely said, all the other stories aside, its far more better for them to be with the GOSL than to be with the tigers and die in the final assault…

They had been given ample opportunity to leave to safer areas. The army had come in trucks to take away families, but the LTTE didnt let them go. How would I know? A top shot in the army I am related to. I don’t see any reason for him to lie…

    @ eyeliner,

My point is…. The LTTE should let them go… 🙂

TMS – I don’t think anyone’s waiting to shoot or torture “us”. We’re not saying anything worth their effort.
